This involves removing plaque, flossing, examining the gums for infections or signs of gum disease, and polishing the teeth. There may be x-rays involved if the dental hygienist spots a problem for the dentist to further examine, like a cavity or a sensitive spot if the patient has complaints of pain. Hygienists will also educate the patient on proper flossing techniques and brushing habits.Summary of Essential Job Functions:The duties of a dental hygienist are among the most comprehensive and varied in the dental office. The dental hygienist performs many tasks requiring both interpersonal and technical skills.
